In the first chapter, kinetic models for heterogeneous reaction of electrophilic reactants in solid-fluid systems are developed. The preparation of different polymeric structures to develop ion-exchange resins with special performance characteristics and properties for particular applications is detailed. The employment of spectral techniques to study the structure and properties of zeolites is examined. Their use to identify and examine the ion species sorbed by zeolites and organic ion exchangers is evaluated as well. The properties of natural ion-exchange materials with emphasis on clay minerals, are examined. The invention of ion-exchange resins with equilibrium properties that show a considerable variation with temperature is described.
