National and international efforts to improve the performance and safety of nuclear power plants were among a wide range of technical and economic issues addressed at the IAEA's International Conference on Nuclear Power Performance and Safety, which concluded in Vienna in early October 1987. The following topics are discussed in this paper: nuclear power development - energy and nuclear power needs, economics and performance, sustained record of excellence, targets for the 1990s; nuclear power safety - severe accidents, safety assessment, safety technology, international co-operation; nuclear fuel cycle - front-end of nuclear fuel cycle, reactor fuel design performance and utilization, back-end of nuclear fuel cylce, decontamination and decommissioning.
