摘要
The band pressure is on the external surface of a circular cylinder. The analysis is based upon the theory of bending of a beam on an elastic foundation. Two cases of cylinder - one of finite length and the other of infinite length - have been considered. The deformations and stresses of both have been calculated and plotted for various parameters of the cylinders and pressure band. It is concluded that the deformation and the circumferential stresses produced in a cylinder of finite length are higher than their corresponding values for a cylinder of infinite length whereas the longitudinal stresses are lower in values. Such problems arise in many situations, namely, mechanical handling equipments like rope drums when the wall thickness of the drum is relatively small as compared to the radius of the drum, in case of a cylinder prestressed by winding a wire with constant tension in the wire over only half the portion of the cylinder, etc.
