Heat recovery and smoke removal from residential wood and coal flue gases by gravel columns

A column of gravel is an inexpensive heat exchanger for the flue gases from residential stoves. The system requires a fan for forced draft, and this increases the thermal efficiency of a wood/coal stove to 80-85%, as compared to 50-65% for the stove with a conventional chimney. At the same time, the gravel column removes 75% of the particulates from the flue gas. Cleaning and maintenance of the gravel column are minimal. Gravel columns are adaptable to new and existing housing.
