For more than a century William Blythe & Co. has manufactured arsenic acid on a tonnage scale, thus making arsenicals an important part of the production program at Holland Bank Works, near Accrington. Corrosion occurs to a greater or lesser extent within process equipment, but inside a particular tank corrosion is most aggressive. This tank is used for evaporating dilute arsenic acid. Four years ago the company consulted Sandvik's advisory service to help find the answer to costly corrosion problems in this vessel. As a result of tests, Sandvik recommended its Sanicro 28 stainless steel, which is effective against all types of corrosion under severe conditions. Subsequently in 1983, Blythe purchased 2 inch NB SCH 40 Sandvik Sanicro 28 stainless steel tubing to ASTM A312. The tubing was fabricated into coils, and after hydraulic testing there followed 100% radiography of the butt welds. The coils were then attached by flanges to the downhole pipe inside the evaporator vessel.
