The development and features of a remote meter reading device for the gas distribution industry that is a completely mechanical system which is driven by the meter index itself is described. The four basic parts of the system are; drive crank; mechanical counter; flexible cable, and cable conduit. The unit was throughly evaluated during a three-year test program. It was successfully operated at flow rates from 1 cf/h to 250 cf/h on class 175 American, Rockwell and Sprague meters without affecting meter accuracy or integrity.
