The influence of deformation rate on martensite formation in the course of extension was studied on metastable Fe-Ni-C alloys and trip steels. If the specimens do not become appreciably heated an increase in rate of deformation is found to activate the martensitic transformation in all the steels studied. The intensity of this process diminishes at high rates of deformation because the specimens become heated. In Fe-Ni-C alloys with a pronounced peak of elongation the excessive heating at high rates causes a big drop in the plasticity.
