The performance of Magnox fuel elements in the power producing reactors of the UK electricity boards is described based on the information derived from programmes of post-irradiation examination. These have included fuel from extended irradiation trials in which peak rated elements have reached 9000 MWd/t. The fuel properties of importance are described, namely shrinkage, bowing, fuel failures, fin deformation and uranium swelling, and it is shown how it has been possible to justify further increases in irradiation limits in recent years.
