Specific features of lime as a prospective refractory for manifold commercial uses. The role of carbon and the so-called ″salt phase″ in building-up the microstructure and influencing the service behavior of CaO-based composite materials. Survey of the groups of lime bricks being actually developed and their properties. Some problems connected with the production technology, applications and development programs. Assessment of service results in some installations.
