The prototype system is based on eddy-current technique for hot surface inspection of slabs, billets, etc, of steel at temperatures exceeding 2000 F. The system is designed so that it can automatically control a hot scarfer. Cost advantages from the savings of energy by not having to reheat the slabs between casting and hot rolling equates to about 35 to 40 million bbl of oil or gas equivalent/year.
