Boston's Southwest Corridor Project represents the best in civil engineering not only for its size, complexity and technology, but for its environmental, public policy and social benefits. The 1988 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement integrates and relocates rapid transit and railroad service. A simplified description is that three high speed railroad tracks and the antiquated Orange Line, including its elevated segment, were relocated in a below grade, open cut right-of-way. The 743 million project is the largest public construction effort in the history of Massachusetts. This paper describes this urban transportation project in detail.
