It is shown for the first time that polyarylene phthalides form colored solutions in concentrated 94% sulfuric acid ( epsilon approx. 1 multiplied by 10**4 l. /mole. cm), which are characterized by relatively high stability of optical density. It was found that the color of solutions depends on the chemical structure of the dissolved polymer. A new highly sensitive method was developed (minimum concentration 0. 02 mu g/ml) for the quantitative determination of polyarylene phthalides, which involves the photometric evaluation of their colored solutions in sulfuric acid.
