Although it was conceived 60 years ago, the Corning ribbon machine has not been challenged as the dominant machine for the production of high volumes of accurate, thin-wall glass bulbs for incandescent lamps and similar items. In recognition of this fact, in 1983 the American Society of Mechanical Engineers awarded Corning Glass Works a bronze plaque declaring the ribbon machine to be the tenth International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, thus ranking it with the world's first steam engine.
