The problems analyzed in this paper are: rational design of damaged structures, a neglected art; gradual implementation stages; review of basic terminology; classification of damages based upon their nature; serviceability and durability requirements; quality control; pathological image; evaluation of residual mechanical characteristics; overall analytical estimation of the residual bearing capacity of the structure; choice of action; load transfer mechanisms between existing structural elements and new structural elements; revised partial safety factors; dimensioning of additional structural arrangements; final structural analysis; and estimation of effectiveness of work.
