Die makers adopted traveling-wire electrical discharge machining (TW/EDM) in the early 1920's. Now mold makers are seeing opportunities to make their work more productive. Most of today's machines have cutting rates in excess of 20 inches per hour. In seven years, the cutting rates have increased more than 300 percent. Applications for wire-EDM in building injection molds is categorized as follows: cavities, cores and inserts, ejection components, parting lines, and electrodes. Each is briefly explained.
