The National Fire Protection Association (NEPA) adopted a new document titled 'Recommended Practice for Fire Protection for Hydroelectric Generating Plants' (NFPA 851) in May 1987. NFPA 851 provides recommendations (not requirements) for fire prevention and fire protection. It is intended to provide guidance to those charged with the design, procurement, construction and protection of hydroelectric power plants. The heart of the 851 document is Chapter 5: 'Identification and Protection of Hazards'. This chapter includes guidance for selecting fire protection systems and complements the fire risk evaluation. Fire and explosion hazards are identified along with commensurate protection criteria.
