A study was performed on lightwave micromachines for optical networks. The microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based gain equalizer was presented. It was found that wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transport systems require tunable equalization not only of gain shapes but also of various forms of dispersion, which causes pulse distortion and thus intersymbol interference.
