It has been reported that the performance of aluminum alloy anodes containing aluminum and tin is improved by the addition of one of the elements such as zirconium, bismuth and magnesium due to the expansion of the aluminum lattice. Similar work was undertaken to study the effect of magnesium additions to a ternary mixture containing aluminum, 5% zinc and 0. 03% indium. Ten quarternary compositions containing up to 9% magnesium were subjected to electrochemical studies involving (i) time dependence of open circuit potential (ii) anodic polarisation and (iii) anodic efficiency. The anode composition with 2% magnesium gave maximum efficiency with a marginal drop in driving voltage.
