Institutions for higher education in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and government agencies concerned with industrial development in these regions share a commitment to the definition and development of initiatives to support indigenous innovation and enterprise. The ETEP is a product of dialogue between universities in Northern Ireland and the Mid-West region of the Republic of Ireland; and local enterprise agencies in these areas. The sponsoring bodies are LEDU (Local Enterprise Development Unit) which is the Small Business Agency; the University of Ulster and the Queen's University of Belfast (in Northern Ireland); the Innovation Centre (a division of Shannon Development) and the National Institute of Higher Education; Limerick (in the Republic of Ireland). Funding support is provided by these enterprise agencies and by the Social Fund of the European Communities. As well as the direct support of technology based entrepreneurial endeavour; it was considered that ETEP would result in the refinement of relevant formal and informal training techniques; and the enhancement of practical mechanisms for cooperation in industrial development and related training between regions with differing administrative structures.Funding support is provided by the Netherlands Ministry for Economic Affairs and the University of Twente;
