A theoretical analysis is carried out to study the effects of surface roughness on the characteristics of a slipper bearing in a mixed lubrication regime. The slipper tilting angle is assumed to be zero. Forces due to hydrodynamic pressure and asperity contact are based on the Patir and Cheng's average flow model and the Greenwood and Williamson's theory of random rough surfaces in contact, respectively. The effects of the roughness on the behavior of the slipper and the power loss are presented as parameters of the standard deviation of roughness, the balance ratio of forces acting on the slipper and the operating conditions. As a result, it is shown that the slipper bearing in the fluid film lubrication gives smaller power loss at high rotational speeds, and in the mixed lubrication at low ones.
