A custom-designed 11-station gravure press at American Packaging handles a wide range of paper, film or foil substrates to produce flexible structures printed in-line in up to 10 colors, or laminations of up to three substrates, also done in-line. A total of 7,500 cylinders currently used by this and three other gravure printing presses are stored and retrieved by an automated cylinder handling system from Symat Inc. Said to be the world's largest such system, it can store up to 11,958 gravure cylinders which delivers it to a chain conveyor that indexes as each cylinder is unloaded.
