In order to find out the cause of embrittlement and improve the ductility of Ni-base cast superalloys with high Mo and W contents, a systematic observation has been made of the fracture characteristics and the surface composition of the fracture surface. Results from this study showed that one of the main reasons for embrittlement of the alloys is a mismatch of the hard and brittle phases with the matrix, which leads to breakage of interfaces and thus lowers the toughness of these alloys.
