The fundamentals of spacing statistics, a thermodynamic treatment of assemblies of interacting objects, are demonstrated. The application of spacing statistics to nonstoichiometric phases at high temperatures is reviewed. The use of quasi-chemical equilibrium methods to reveal clustering of defects is criticized.
