The various important visual standards established by the SSPC Surface Preparation Steering Committee representing owners, specifiers, and contractors, are studied. SSPC-VIS 1, the revised standard illustrates both uncoated and previously coated steel surfaces blast cleaned to five degrees of cleanliness corresponding to written specifications. SSPC-VIS 3 illustrates surfaces cleaned to comply with SSPC-SP 2, Hand Tool Cleaning, SSPC-SP 3, Power Tool Cleaning, and SSPC-SP II,Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal. The appearance of a power tool-cleaned surface varies with the type of tool used, and VIS-3 illustrates each of the initial surface conditions prepared to SSPC-SP 3 using hand tools,power wire brush, a sanding disc, and a needle gun. SSPC-VIS 4/NACE VIS 7, the visual standard jointly developed by SSPC and NACE International, illustrates the cleanliness conditions described in SSPC-SP 12/NACE No. 5, Surface Preparation and Cleaning Steel and Other Hard Materials.
