One of the conditions of increasing the effectiveness and quality of new forms of electric pumps is correct selection of the construction materials and the method of machining them. Experimental investigations were conducted of the conditions for machining the key slot on the long shaft of steel and K monel alloy with cutters of R6M5 steel, the most effective method of supplying the cutting fluid, the method of strengthening the tool, and the optimum conditions for continuous milling of the key slots were determined. The relationship of cutter life to the type of cutting fluid and the method of delivery are given. Jet delivery of it to the cutting zone under pressure was found to be more effective than by other means. For the purpose of increasing the life of the cutter they were carbonitrided and the experimental results are given. The use of cutters after carbonitriding and of jet delivery of the cutting fluid makes it possible to increase tool life by 1. 5 times.
