U.S. newsprint still soft, producers work through part of price hike

North American newsprint demand was less than robust in 2002 because of an unprecedented two-year decline in US advertising, as well as inconsistent US economic growth. Newsprint prices dropped from a high of $625/mton in June 2001 to $445/mton in July 2002. Year-to-date through September 2002, total US newsprint consumption was 6.2 million mtons - down 2.1% when compared with consumption through September 2001. No new newsprint capacity projects are being planned in North America for the year 2003.
