This chapter consists of seven sections dealing with various aspects of the stability of concrete structures. Where possible, various approaches to the problem are considered, and no attempt is made to endorse any particular code of practice. The various sections review and discuss those properties of concrete and reinforcement and reinforced concrete cross sections that are important in the study of the stability of concrete members and buildings. The stability of individual members and the factors affecting it; various design procedures for individual columns, including prestressed columns; the stability of three-dimensional frames and precast frames; including the concept of second-order analyses of frames and several procedures for carrying them out; and practical procedures for considering stability in the design of tall concrete buildings.
