The S-N curve in axial fatigue of pre-strained 0. 45% C steel specimens with a small hole is approximately composed of two straight lines. In the present paper, the physical background of this phenomenon is explained based on the behavior of a small crack expressed by the two crack growth laws corresponding to small and large scale yielding.
