An investigation of heat transfer in cylinders of IC engines is reviewed. Methods of researching heat transfer in cylinders, especially the surface temperature method, are discussed. The history of models of heat transfer in cylinders are divided into three generations, that is, the dimensional models, the simple dimensionless models and the flow-based dimensionless models. This paper describes the experimental investigations of heat transfer in cylinders at the Dalian Institute of Technology, including heat flux measurement on a ceramic surface in a combustion chamber. Experimental results show that zirconia has a good effect on heat insulation.
