Reaction time for the discrimination of nontarget words

The reaction time for the discrimination between the target word and nontarget words was measured using the stimuli which were made by substituting different phonemes for some of the phonemes in the target word. As the substituted phoneme, /k/ was used in more than half of nontarget words so that the reaction time for the phoneme /k/ can be used as the reaction time for the detection of substituted phonemes. It is shown that if nontarget words are discriminated when the substituted phonemes are detected, the response latency for nontarget words is the equal to the substituted phoneme detection time.
