The objectives and constraints that have led to the use of ultrasonics in velocity and flowrate measurement are first described. The physical theories and technologies that are presently available on the French market, including sensors and data processing, are then briefly recalled. The experience of measurement network managers relative to rivers and sewerage flowrate measurement is summed up. Site characteristics, maintenance costs and reliability of the equipment is discussed. The future prospects of the development of the ultrasonic measurements of local velocity and extrapolation to determine the mean velocity are outlined.
