ASTM has achieved a high quality of test surveillance by using full-time employees to schedule and monitor calibration testing. The self-supporting operation is financed by test fees and sale of reference oils. The industry recognizes a central ASTM oil handling and distribution system, along with staff positions dedicated to visiting laboratories and collecting and analyzing data. The result is a very cost-effective technique meeting the needs of industry. While TMB is not actively soliciting additional tasks, controlled growth is being permitted. The Test Monitoring Center currently has additional programs to collect and distribute reference oils for the L-33, L-37, L-42, and L-60 gear lubricant evaluation tests. Many of the current tests within Sub-committee B can be evaluated using similar mathematical summaries and controls as those currently installed on the TMC computer.
