An Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) linked with a bar code system supplies R. J. Reynolds' distribution network on a just-in-time basis with 99% inventory accuracy cost savings in the millions. Reynolds relies on a 17-aisle, high-bay AS/RS (Harnischfeger) linked to an extensive bar code identification network capable of tracking up to 4,000 stockkeeping units (SKU's) in over 23,000 storage locations. The systems consolidate and control the flow of cigarettes and tobacco products throughout the company's distribution network.
