Research on a prototype system for on-line Computer Aided Design (CAD) of surface warships was carried out at the Admiralty Marine Technology Establishment (AMTE) Teddington. This paper outlines the experience gained in the Ship Department of the Ministry of Defence during the first phase of application and development of a Computer Aided Ship Design (CASD) System. Successful application of the system to current warship design studies has demonstrated its usefulness and potential; it has also shown the need for improvement and extension.
