Problems in ensuring a safe water supply under peak consumption conditions are considered. An example of the emergency measures adopted by the water supply system of the city of Zurich after a fire seriously damaged one of the city's pumping stations is described. Emergency water supply measures which have been decreed for the city of Zurich and for all of Switzerland are discussed. Refs.
