A simplified method of calculating shaved tooth forms has been developed. In this method, the depth of cut is evaluated from geometrical interpenetration between tooth flanks of cutter and work gear. This geometrical depth of cut can be calculated using the mechanismic requirement. Stock removal, from which the shaved tooth form is calculated, should be estimated on the basis of the given relationship between depth of cut and stock removal. In the previous report, this relationship was properly selected to obtain qualitative agreement between the measured and the calculated tooth forms of the shave gear. However, it should be determined taking into consideration the cutting mechanism. For this mechanism, a cutting model of gear shaving has been proposed. In the present paper, it is revealed how the model should be applied to the simplified calculation method of the shave tooth form. As a result, one of three unknown parameters included in the model, which represents the characteristic of a residual ridge due to the deflection of teeth, can be determined from tooth forms shaved by an unmodified cutter, thereby a trial process for selecting the optimum modification of cutter tooth form can be performed on a computer.
