CHILL Development System (CDS) is an evolutionary set of tools to support software construction for Stored Program Control (SPC) telephone exchanges or other apparatus in the telecommunications field. The main goal of the study has been the development of a machine independent CHILL compiler, suitable to produce code for a broad range of target machines. The paper describes also a model of a CHILL abstract machine presents a sample definition, in CHILL itself, of a synchronization/communication feature. The CHILL abstract machine is useful both for compiler adaptability and application software portability. Furthermore it could be used to implement a CHILL engine.
