Cold shear welding

Cold welding is a solid phase welding process (normally performed at room temperature) where the two metals are bonded by joint plastic deformation. Several metal forming processes can be used for cold welding. Basically, bonds are formed either by action of normal pressure on the contacting surfaces (cold welding) or by that combined with relative displacement, i.e., dry friction of contacting surfaces (cold shear welding). Three typical mechanisms of surface interactions have been found. An application is tubular connectors welded from Al-Cu tubes for connection of aluminium wires (ropes) to those of copper on railways in feeders, disconnectors, connectors between efforting and feeding wires, etc.
