The sulphite-anthraquinone pulping process at intermediate alkalinity is characterized by unique maxima of delignification, pulp yield, and viscosity which are produced when the cooking liquor contains 75 to 90% sodium sulphite, the remainder consisting of sodium hydroxide and/or sodium carbonate (as Na//2O). The resulting pulp is as strong or even stronger than conventional kraft pulp and bleaches much more easily. Application of this process would permit the elimination or drastic reduction in size of present equipment for lime burning and green liquor causticization.
