Structure and wear resistance of plasma sprayed Al2O3+13%TiO2 ceramic coating

The phase structure and phase composition in the plasma sprayed Al2O3+13%TiO2 ceramic coatings were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The ceramic coating displays rather dense, showing that it possesses a low porosity. Besides the main phase, metastable γ-Al2O3, there also exist stable phase α- Al2O3 and TiO2 in the coating. The Al2O3-rich lamellae and TiO2-rich lamellae obviously show a laminated structure and composition diffusion between them. The coating design has an effect on the microhardness. The additive TiO2 can improve the wear resistance of the coating.
