The paper and pulp market of the US during the third quarter of 2000 is discussed. The hike in newsprint prices was attributed to the continued strong consumption by US daily newspapers. Owing to the newsprint price hike, an increase in the prices for brightness uncoated mechanical paper was planned. The uncoated woodfree sector struggled in the third quarter due to high inventories and slack demand. Prices for several recovered paper grades fell in the third quarter thereby creating unusual differences between the various wastepaper grades.
