The relative merits of various mechanical energy storage systems are assessed when used in conjunction with solar and wind sources. This initial study considered flywheel, pneumatic (compressed air) and underground pumped hydro storage concepts. Both thermal and photovoltaic collectors utilizing stationary flat plate through total tracking focused systems were included. For wind collection, a horizontal axis wind turbine was modeled. Electrical load demands from single residences through utility grids were included. Alternative systems were ranked according to levelized, busbar energy cost calculations, and the amount of displaced, conventionally generated electricity also served as a benefit measure.
