Laboratory study on asphalt rubber mixture evaluation index for high temperature performance

Asphalt rubber mixture was made by base asphalt and crumb rubber used in domestic's pavement engineering. By systematic laboratory rutting tests, the relationships between dynamic stability of asphalt rubber mixture and 177°C brookfield viscosity, softening point, penetration of asphalt rubber binder were studied. The results indicate that the 177°C brookfield viscosity and softening point of binder can be used as evaluation index for the high-temperature performance of asphalt rubber mixture. The results also indicate that the Americal requirement(ASTM D 6144-97) for 177°C brookfield viscosity and softening point are inconvenient and corresponding asphalt rubber mixture rutting test result may be too low according to Chinese specification(JTJ F40-2004) for polymer-modified mixture. So more convenient requirement for 177°C brookfield viscosity and softening point are advised based on laboratory rutting tests and domestic's engineering experience. The results also indicate that high-temperature performance of asphalt rubber mixture remarkably varies with different types of crumb rubber.
