Challenging times

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has proposed a new requirement with the European Commision and Parliament on the Third Maritime Safety Package to make shipping safer and cleaner. The new requirement will monitor Recognized Organizations (RO) within Europe, based on specific measures and criteria, which is expected to be made available worldwide and the body should also be linked to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The final amendments made by the class help to promote maritime safety through the adoption of practical standards that address real world issues including the continued exposure of class to unlimited liability. The IACS is also working on non-SOLAS equipment that includes pumps, compressors, turbines, and diesel engines, to address proposals within the Package. It also focuses on environmental issues that include ballast water management, onboard waste management, cold-ironing, coatings, and oily water separators.
