The self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) of intermetallic compounds is numerically investigated accounting for the various heterogeneous chemical steps of the process and exploring different reaction enthalpies. Propagation instabilities both along the longitudinal axis of the reacting pellet and in the transversal plane are identified and related to the reaction enthalpy. Longitudinal steady propagation is observed both in the most and in the least exothermic systems; with a wide scenario of pulsating or irregular behaviors in between. The fields of existence of transversal and longitudinal instabilities appear as mutually exclusive. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved;
