The US is looking for South Korea to take over certain armistice functions, including those at the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The US-led UN Command (UNC) was established as a unified war-fighting command aimed at countering the 1950 invasion of South Korea by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK-North Korea). The RoK-US Combined Forces Command (CFC) was established in the year 1978 as the primary deterrent force. The US force realignment in the RoK includes the consolidation and relocation of military bases together with a reduction of troop strength by about a third to some 25,000. Timing of the shift in war-time operational command, which is due to be decided by the mid of the year 2007, will lead to a dismantling of the CFC. Seoul is.
