The idea of guiding light through hollow pipes dates to the 19th century, but solid-core fibers made much better optical waveguides. Now the emerging technology of hollow-core fibers has resurrected an old idea. "Vacuum is the very best optical material we know, but we need guidance,” OSA Fellow Sir David Payne said, describing the attractions of hollow-core optical fibers in a plenary talk at OFC 2020.
