IN738LC superalloy was fabricated on stainless steel through plasma arc additive manufacturing technology. The effect of processing parameters on microstructure and mechanical property of as-built samples was studied by adjusting peak current, duty cycle and welding speed on the condition of maintaining the same heat input. Optical microscope, scanning electrical microscope, energy dispersive spectrum and microhardness measurements were carried out to analyse the grain structure, precipitations and mechanical properties. In addition, the simulation of solidification process was also performed to illustrate the mechanism of precipitating phases. Results show that microstructure of as-built samples mainly consists of equiaxial dendrites, columnar dendrites and cellular dendrites. There are many particle or needle carbides precipitating in the inter-dendritic regions. γ' phases will precipitate under low dilution and enhance microhardness remarkably. © 2021, Materials Review Magazine.
