Double-track upgrade on the Upper Rhine - Geotechnical aspects

A second track was laid alongside the previously single-track 4.2 km long Murg - Laufenburg-Ost section of Deutsche Bahn's Basle-Lindau line in the year 2000. Since then the use of tilting trains has enabled higher running speeds. For the second track, the subgrade was widened and strengthened in places. Existing retaining walls, cuttings and embankments as well as the 145 year old Rappenstein tunnel had to be retested for clearance and static load and reconstructed as necessary.
