Traffic engineers are having hard time designing traffic calming schemes. The scheme covers everything from road humps, chicanes, rumble strips to safety cameras. However, they are not governed by one set or have no design regulations or standards at all. Instead, there is an excess of advisory notes and case studies. Designers must start from a point of knowing the standards and practical requirements to create a solution that solves the defined problem. Engineers should take a more innovative approach, such as removing street furniture and re-thinking design solutions. Designers must avoid the miserable compromise of a partially-compliant scheme that is neither a clean sheet nor a standard design.
